New England realist artist, Andrew Gordon Moore operates a studio and gallery in Harhaven, Oak Bluffs, on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard. He is a realist painter, working in watercolor, egg tempera and oil. As a hunter, fisherman, sailor, and self-taught naturalist, the world outdoors is the inspiration for his paintings. Andrew’s art reveals this deep involvement in and appreciation of island subjects studied through every season. Occasionally, the artist journeys to coastal Maine and other locations adding these coastal Maine landscapes and other wild life topics to his predominantly Martha’s Vineyard based subject matter.

While Andrew encounters the subjects of his paintings during excursions on the sea and in the field, he paints the final work in a controlled, slowly-layered manner in the studio. Here, he surrounds himself with objects from the field – rocks, grass, dried plants, fish, birds – and numerous drawings and photo- graphs. Andrew then builds the idea from a small sketch into the intricate final painting, blending studied detail into a strong composition of color, tone, pattern and form.

Andrew’s work is owned by collectors, mostly from New England, often with ties to Martha’s Vineyard. While he has shown on Newbury Street in Boston, at various Vineyard galleries, and had a one man show at the New Britain Museum of American Art, he prefers the direct contact offered by his private gallery. He appeared in American Artist Magazine, June 1998, and New England/ New Talent, an exhibit of seventeen artists chosen from a field of five hundred at the Fitchburg Art Museum.

Internationally renowned ceramic artist, Chris Gustin, has spent decades devoted to making, and teaching ceramic art.

Of his own work, Mr. Gustin states, “I am interested in pottery that makes connections to the human figure. The figurative analogies used to describe pots throughout history all in some way invite touch. The pots that I respond to all speak of a clear, direct sense of the hand. The hand is celebrated in the work by its maker, whether it is that of a fifteenth century rural potter or a nineteenth century court artisan. And it becomes a necessary tool for the user in understanding the relationship of the object to its function, and subsequently, to how that object informs ones life.

I want my work to provoke image to the viewer, to suggest something that is just on the other side of consciousness. I don’t want my pots to conjure up a singular recollection, but ones that change with each glance, with each change of light. I use surfaces that purposely encourage touch, and by inviting the hand to explore the forms as well as the eye, I hope to provoke numerous memories, recollections that have the potential to change from moment to moment.”

A specially constituted selection committee chose Zeit’s design for the work last autumn from three finalists, culled from responses to the council’s request for proposals from artists. The dedication ceremony for the sculpture took place early October.

The memorial stands 12 feet high and depicts a cluster of figures in relief above curved panels that suggest the hull of a ship. The base of the piece is inscribed with text by Rev. Peter Gomes, a Plymouth resident and Havard University minister and professor. An eagle at the top symbolizes the American dream. Zeitz describes it as, “adventurous, protective, and a little bit agressive because that’s the way we all are.”

“My art reflects the three different worlds of which I
am a part.It is a complement of European
Renaissance, Byzantine monumentalism and my own native
Azerbaijan ancient miniature illustration.
My paintings, graphics and murals combine western
classical beauty, eastern religious mysticism and
multi-faceted splendor of Islamic art.
My artwork is inspired by my inner soul to feel;a
colorful expression of the emotion I have for life
melded with the discipline of the Baron Von Stieglitz
School of Art in St.Petersburg(,Russia).”

Through art I attempt to journey into the mind, and retrieve the images we construct there, where our thoughts and dreams arrange recent and distant memory-pictures of the natural and constructed worlds. In uniting the conscious and unconscious realms of experience, “dream” and “reality” become a single, surreality.
To recreate the art of the mind, I implement the camera and computer, combining select scenes and elements; digitally altering the
composition, background, and the play of light according to a specific vision.
The results are images that are unfamiliar as outward objects of our eyes, but which, I hope, will strike a deep inner resonance.. ”

At the age of 22 he became Britain’s youngest royal portrait artist since Sir Thomas Lawrence painted Queen Charlotte in 1790 at the age of 21. Although he has had little formal art training, Richard Stone’s success is a direct result of a natural talent and a strong determination to succeed in the career he has pursued since childhood.

Born in 1951 the son of a Colchester postman, Mr. Stone began cultivating his talent following an accident at the age of four that left him with a fractured skull and permanent deafness in his right ear. The young artist began sketching in a notebook and later painted to communicate with his family and teachers, demonstrating a keen sense of perspective and mixing colors.

When he was fourteen, Richard went to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, where he saw a portrait by Sir Gerald Kelly. With the directness that has subsequently characterized his career, he wrote to Sir Gerald, saying how much he had admired the portrait and asking if he could possibly help and advise him. The result was prompt. Sir Gerald could offer him all the reasons against being a portrait painter, but if he would like to call and see him, and bring his work, he was welcome. Richard took along what work he had done, listened to Sir Gerald’s reasons, and would not be dissuaded. It was the start of a friendship that was to last until Sir Gerald’s death in 1972.

“Over the past 20 years, I have been a mechanical designer, home designer/builder, musician, and experimental artist. During the past five years, I have been filling my home and those of friends and family, with my
unique 3-D “Wallscapes”. This past summer I built up a collection of pieces to display at several art fairs in the San Diego area. My work now spans from full wall space and geometric themed “Wallscapes”, to small individual sea life pieces.

These primarily wood and metal sculptures are mostly abstract
representations of my interests intopography, sea life, space, technology, shapes and patterns. My designs come from dreams, life, memories and often, experimentation with shapes. From these ideas I create the basic form of the piece, often using and modifying parts and hardware to add a more abstract edge. Final colors and textures are added and enhanced to obtain the desired depth and character. No two pieces are ever exactly the same. My goal is to share my perspective of our world, the events that shape what we are, inspire thought, and add a little more beauty into our daily lives.”

Heather Goff loves to take photographs, and she loves to design and program websites. She found herself looking at the hundreds of digital images taken since she bought her first digital camera and decided to make them accessible to the world at large. And thus the site of Martha’s Vineyard digital photographs mvlandscapes.com was born. The island of Martha’s Vineyard where Heather lives is a beautiful backdrop to everyday life, and she hopes through her website mvlandscapes.com to share the island’s many views.
